Our Countryside

Around Ruffec, the Gardens (June to September)

Around Ruffec, you will find several gardens to visit. In Saint Fraigne, the small bridges will lead you from islet to islet, from garden to garden.Flax, hemp, corn, peat... Each year, the Festival "Arborescence" creates 10 "ephemeral gardens", all on the same theme.
In Mansle, the garden contains 500 different varieties of fuchsias and 200 varieties of marsh plants.
In Tusson, you will visit the medieval monastic garden, arranged in small enclosed areas, arranged in squares around the fountain : vegetable garden, medicinal garden, flower garden, orchard-cemetary.

The Bandiat Gardens and the Chêne Vert Arboretum

In the Bandiat Gardens (Souffrignac), you must visit the collection garden, the vegetable garden and the ancient farm tools museum. Throughout the year, the Bandiat Gardens organise courses : cooking jams, basket-making, floral art and many more.

In Chabanais, the Arboretum contains 2500 different trees, bushes and perennial plants, and offers gardening courses (sketching, garden conception, plantes, maintenance...).

Jardins du Chaigne

The Chaigne Gardens opened in 2003 and received the "Remarquable Gardens" label in 2009, by the French Culture Department. They are located in the heart of Grande Champagne, in Touzac, in the heart of Cognac vineyards. These 7 acres gardens contain a variety of flower beds : roses, agapanthus and many others offer a colourful landscape.

The Chaigne gardens are open from March 15th to October 31st every day except Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Les Etapes du Cognac

Les Etapes du Cognac offer four circuits in the Cognac vineyards. When driving in West Charente, follow the signs and discover the traditions, gastronomy and heritage. Each circuit has its colour : green for the vineyard, indigo for the river, yellow for heritage and red for the traditions.

In the Boixe forest (Ruffecois), you will discover burial mounds and dolmens, flora and fauna (information signs on the paths).
Charente Limousine offers a landscape of bocage sprinkled with oak and chestnut trees forests. Confolens stands in a granitic region crossed by the river Vienne, and Roumazières-Loubert is the capital city of bricks and tiles.
South Charente is ideal for walking and biking ; situated on the border of Périgord, it shows a landscape of hills studded with villages.
In West Charente, you will walk or bike in the vineyards or along the river Charente.
En Horte and Tardoire, the paths lead you on a discovery of flora and fauna in the vast forest of Braconne.
The Bandiat and the Tardoire rivers which are flowing into the ground and crossing the massif, have thus provoked spectacular collapsing in the ground : la Grande Fosse, la Fosse Mobile, la Fosse Limousine.
In Angoumois, the Vallée des Eaux Claires (Clear Waters Valley) offers many paths overlooked by the foot of the limestone cliffs. At the foot of Angoulême, the ancient towpath offers a walk along the river Charente.
